Flat Rate / Fixed Rate

Flat rates are very common in car finance. A flat rate is the amount of interest you can expect to pay each year on the initial loan amount. It gives you an easy way to work out your repayments each month, as well as the total amount of interest repayable from a few calculations.

Example – Borrowing £10,000 at a flat rate of 9% over 3 years.
9% of £10,000 gives you £900. This is the amount of interest you will pay EACH year.
£900 x 3 years = £2,700 in total interest.
Borrowing £10,000 + £2,700 interest means you would pay back £12,700 in total.

If you wish you can change years into months to work out how much interest, you pay per month.

Do not confused the flat rate with the APR as they are completely different. If you are getting a quote, make sure you know if it’s the flat rate or the APR you are being quoted. It is important as it will make a difference to your overall repayable. Some companies will try to hide the fact it’s a flat rate and not the APR to make it sound cheaper.

APR Annual Percentage Rate

“APR stands for the Annual Percentage Rate of charge. You can use it to compare different credit and loan offers. The APR takes into account not just the interest on the loan but also other charges you have to pay, for example, any arrangement fee. All lenders have to tell you what their APR is before you sign an agreement. It will vary from lender to lender.” – Official definition from the FCA.

In order to use APR to compare car finance products, it’s important that you are comparing like for like quotes. It is essential you are using the same figures and term from each company you get a quote from. If all the figures are not the same, then you can’t compare products and it’s difficult to work out which deal is best for you.

Representative APR

ALL financial advertisements that include an incentive to apply must contain a representative APR. If you see an advertisement with a ‘Representative APR’ then this rate or below must be provided to a minimum of 51% of the credit agreements taken out during that financial promotion.
